Professor Stefan Hoffman
The Systems Biology Institute (SBI) deeply mourns the untimely demise of Professor Stefan Hohmann, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden - one of the pioneers of the field of yeast systems biology. Professor Hohmann had deep and long-standing research collaborations with SBI researchers on representation, visualization and modeling of yeast molecular biology. He had a shared passion for mentoring and nurturing young researchers in the field. Many students and researchers from SBI visited Professor Hohmann’s research group in Sweden, where he was a gracious host both in the laboratory as well as opening his home for visitors to experience the culture, music and food of Swedish summers.
Similarly, many students and scholars from his group spent time at SBI Tokyo as exchange students researching yeast genetics while imbibing the dynamics of life in Tokyo. A founding member of the International Society of Systems Biology (ISSB), he was very active in the systems biology community, having organized the 9th International Conference on Systems Biology 2008 (ICSB 2008) at Goteborg, Sweden. A researcher par excellence, mentor to generations of students, a thorough-bred gentleman who always enjoyed a cold beer with his innumerable collaborators and friends, Professor Hohmann leaves behind an indelible legacy for the scientific community. The SBI family sends its deep condolences to the entire Hohmann family in this time of bereavement.
Gone, but never forgotten, Professor.
